Uyghur Language and Literature — one of the oldest Turkic languages, belonging to the Karluk group. It has a rich historical and literary heritage shaped at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. Today, about 20 million people speak Uyghur in East Turkestan, as well as in communities across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Russia, Turkey, and other countries worldwide.
The Uyghur diaspora actively preserves the language and cultural identity in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Uyghur literature is an integral part of world Turkic culture, tracing back to the Old Uyghur script of the 8th–9th centuries, with modern authors continuing the rich tradition of poetry, prose, and epic storytelling reflecting the spirit and worldview of the Uyghur people.
